Spinal Cord Injuries

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves stretching from the pelvis to the brain. Sensory and motor information from every part of the body below the head travels along the spinal cord to and from the brain. Not only can injuries to the spinal cord be very painful, they can cause permanent damage.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

The long-term effects of a spinal cord injury vary depending on the severity of the wound, the length of time between the injury and treatment, and where along the spine the injury occurs. In medicine, the spine is divided into four different regions. From top to bottom, they are:
  • The cervical region: from just below the head to the top of the shoulders. Injuries to this area can create loss of hand, arm and/or shoulder function. Injuries to the very top of the spine can create total paralysis and render a person unable to breathe without a ventilator.
  • The thoracic region: from the shoulders to the top of the hips. Injuries in this region affect a person’s control of their trunk, or the middle area of their body. They may have difficulty turning their bodies or sitting up straight.
  • Lumbar and sacral regions: from the top of the hips to the tail bone. Injuries to this area can decrease sensation and control of the legs, hips, urinary system, and bowels.

Common Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can be caused by many things, including trauma, cancer, and developmental disorders. The most common causes of traumatic injuries to the spine include diving accidents, vehicular accidents, hunting accidents, assault, and falls.
