Man sentenced to 12 years following child neglect

by Administrator 27. May 2010 02:01

A Rhinelander man will be spending 12 years in jail following a child abuse charge.

Sentencing was passed down earlier this month, as the 23 year-old man pleaded guilty to the two felonies raised against him. He was given a concurrent 12 and 5 year jail sentence for child abuse recklessly causing great harm and neglecting a child causing death. In addition, he will be required to be under the supervision of the District Attorney's Office for 5 years following the jail sentence.

The child's 22 year-old mother was found not guilty of all charges. An Oneida County jury found her not guilty of felony child neglect in January.

The incident occurred May 2009. The child, 10 months of age, was dead with morphine in her system. The father was found responsible for leaving a morphine tablet within reach of the child. In the trial proceedings, it came to light that he noticed when she ingested the pill, but did not find it necessary to take her to the hospital. According to the prosecution, the father was high at the time of the incident.

The man's attorney stated that he intends on setting up an appeal to the decision.

The Wausau wrongful death attorneys of Habush, Habush & Rottier, S.C. would like to express our condolences to those affected by this tragic event.

Toddler death in Marathon County

by Administrator 19. May 2010 01:52

Marathon County Sheriff's Department Captain addressed the media concerning the death of a toddler in Athens.

According to the written statement, the 2 year-old died some time after receiving an injury from scalding on Saturday, which may have contributed to the child's death. The child, the youngest of eight, was found dead in his home on Wednesday morning. The body was taken to the Madison Crime Lab for an autopsy to further the investigation, where police found no signs of physical trauma or abuse, a lack of organ deformities or abnormalities, no indications of dehydration, and no apparent infections. The autopsy did reveal a total adrenal gland depletion, which is usually a sign of extreme stress put on the body. The investigation is ongoing to find if his burns were indeed infected or not.

Police revealed that the boy did received medical attention for his scalding injuries, but the degree or type of care is uncertain. The police are leaving the case open, as the cause of death is yet to be determined. It has not yet been determined whether this incident involves a legal offense or wrongful death.

SUV injures three in rollover accident

by Administrator 11. May 2010 05:34

In Rothschild, Wis., three people were injured after their SUV rolled over on Highway 29, near Business Highway 51.

The incident happened after 5pm on Monday, the police reported. The SUV and another vehicle were merging into the same lane at the same time, leading the SUV's driver to engage in some abrupt moves to escape a larger collision. The police believe that these evasive motions caused the SUV to roll over, injuring the three people inside. The other vehicle was not directly involved in the SUV's overturning.

The three victims were taken to Saint Clare's Hospital in Weston, Wis., and were treated for minor injuries.

Light pole falls, injuring student

by Administrator 5. May 2010 06:26

A female student was injured when a light pole on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus fell shortly after noon, pinning her beneath it. Reportedly, the woman was sitting at a table in an outdoors plaza when the pole fell. She was taken to the hospital with injuries, authorities said. She was able to move her arms and legs, a University spokesperson said.

Some news sources report that gusty winds blew the pole down. Some witnesses say that it was not entirely caused by the wind, because it fell in a different direction than the wind was blowing. They say, rather, that the base of the pole had rusted through.

If you or someone you love has been injured as a result of premises liability or unsafe conditions, contact Habush, Habush & Rottier, S.C., the Wausau attorneys for injuries on property, by calling 800-242-2874.
