2 Injured in Wausau OWI Crash

Posted on Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 6:43 am

Two people were injured in a Wausau car accident Wednesday evening.

According to officials with the Wausau Police Department, the accident occurred at the intersection of Forrest and 9th Streets in downtown Wausau. Police say 47 year-old Jeffrey Gerhardt rear-ended a vehicle at a stop sign.

The driver and a passenger, of the vehicle Gerhardt hit, complained of back pain after the accident. Police say they did not need to be hospitalized.

Gerhardt admitted to drinking a beer in his truck before the crash. Officers say there were eight cans of beer in his truck, some of which were unopened. He was charged with second offense drunk driving and is now free on $2500 signature bond.

Child’s Taped Statement Can Be Used in Wausau Sexual Assault Trial

Posted on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at 4:44 am

A judge will not require a 6 year-old child to testify in person against a former Wausau teacher's aide who allegedly sexually assaulted her.

According to court documents, judge Patrick Brady ruled Tuesday that prosecutors can use a videotaped interview with the child as they try to prove that the former teacher's aide, Bee Lor, should stand trail for touching the girl's buttocks this spring. Lor's preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 13th. He has been ordered to stand trial on a separate charge of touching an 11 year-old girl's breasts on the playground of Maine elementary school.

Lor's defense attorney, Keith Ellison, argued that the alleged victim should make the allegations in person. He claimed interviewers asked leading questions and said the child's answers are vague. "It doesn't contain all of the information that should be provided to the court," Ellison said.

Brady ruled the interview will not "deprive any party of a fair opportunity to meet any allegations in the statement."

A number of minor car accidents occurred in Wausau Wednesday evening as a winter storm system moved into the area.

According to officials with the Wausau Police Department, officers were still working to clear accident scenes at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. Lt. Mark Pankow said reports of car crashes and cars sliding off roads began around 4:30 p.m.

Several cars slid into a roadside ditch on Highway 29 near Edgar shortly after 4:30 p.m. Police also responded to two accidents near the intersection of Stewart and 17th avenues just before 5:00 p.m.
