Two people were killed and four were injured in a Wausau auto accident Wednesday on Highway 29.

According to officials with the Rib Mountain Police Department, the accident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 29 and Killdeer Road in the town of Wittenberg. Police say a car traveling north on Highway Q was crossing Highway 29 onto Killdeer Road when it was struck by a westbound SUV.

The two people in the car were killed. The four passengers of the SUV were transported by ambulance to either Ministry Saint Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander or Aspirus Wausau Hospital, according to Captain Tim Carnahan of the Wisconsin State Patrol's Wausau Post. The names of the people involved have not been released.

The right lane of westbound Highway 29 was closed for nearly two hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage. The accident remains under investigation by the Wausau Police Department.
