Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Philip Morris Over Smoker’s Death

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against PhilipMorris Inc. by a Massachusetts woman whose husband died of lung cancer 11 yearsago.

The lawsuit was filed in Worcester Superior Court by BrendaL. Haglund over the death of her 51 year-old husband Stephen. Jury selectionwas scheduled to begin Monday. Testimony is expected to begin next week.

The lawsuit alleges that Stephen Haglund began smokingcigarettes in the 1970s, when Phillip Morris could have employed technologythat extracted addictive nicotine from the tobacco in cigarettes. Attorneys forPhilip Morris claim the technology to extract nicotine from cigarette tobaccodoes not totally remove nicotine. The company says its efforts to market alower-nicotine cigarette were not successful.

The wrongful death trial is expected to continue for aboutfour weeks.
